Roman Cardo Maximus Beirut is an ancient Roman street located in the modern city of Beirut, Lebanon. It runs for approximately 500 meters from the northern end of the Roman Forum to the southern end of the archaeological district and was originally constructed during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. It is one of the most well-preserved examples of Roman architecture in Lebanon, and gives visitors a glimpse into a past era.
The Cardo Maximus served as a main thoroughfare in ancient times, and was used by merchants and traders to transport goods around Beirut. The original pavement has mostly been preserved, with some sections being restored over time due to wear and tear. It contains several points of interest along its length including colonnades, shops, civic structures and other monuments that hint at its rich historical past.
At either end of the street there are large arches that mark its beginning and end, made from pink sandstone blocks decorated with engravings depicting scenes from Greek mythology and imperial victories. Alongside these arches are columns that were likely once used to display statues or other decorations honouring gods or emperors.
The Cardo Maximus provides a fascinating insight into Beirut's history for both locals and tourists alike; it is recommended to pay it a visit when exploring this unique city!
